I worked as a freelance artist during my early twenties, but found flying an airplane more thrilling and profitable. Ten years later, while hospitalized two and a half years, I began writing again. Writing has been my calling many years now. Art and writing for me is based largely on emotion, which is experienced more intensely or anyway more dramatically when younger. The suggestion is that I peaked artistically in my early twenties. These days I am smoother and practiced and faster, but not nearly as dangerously interesting. And we must always be interesting!

  8. I really like this. It is my belief that that repetition changes the physical structure of the brain, the more so through successful practice. Repetition rewarded by success is strengthened. In my late teens, before I left writing, my comprehension of the craft was much sharper, the writing process more energetic and visionary–more inspired. Many years later I am not so accomplished. But I am practiced. My brain is specialized and words flow naturally.
